Utilization of purines and their derivatives by Gaffkya homari.

چکیده
Gaffkya homari, a micrococcus isolated from septicemic lobsters, has an obligate purine requirement (Aaronson, 1956). Further study shows this requirement to be satisfied by several natural purines as well as by several purine analogues. This broad response suggested that G. homari might be useful for studying purine biosynthesis. We wished especially to know whether G. homari utilized 4-amino-5-imidazolecarboxamide ("carboxamide") and 4-amino-5imidazolecarboxamidine ("amidine") in a manner similar to that reported for several other pLirme requiring microorganisms (Aaronson and Nathan, 1954; Aaronson, 1955).

Relationship between purines and folic acid-vitamins in the micrococcus, Gaffkya homari.
Microorganisms that require p-aminobenzoic acid or compounds of the folic acid group may have either requirement replaced by a purine and thymine (or thymidine) and several amino acids or vitamin B12 (Lampen et al., 1949; Stokstad, 1941; Baker et al., 1955); the vitamins, p-aminobenzoic or folic acids, are believed necessary for the synthesis of those compounds which can bypass them (Shive, 195...
متن کاملComparative study of Gaffkya homari, Aerococcus viridans, tetrad-forming cocci from meat curing brines, and the genus Pediococcus.
Snieszko and Taylor (1947), and Hitchner and Snieszko (1947) described gram-positive, tetradforming micrococci associated with a septicemic disease of lobsters. These organisms grew poorly on laboratory media unless a fermentable sugar was added. They were further characterized by their ability to ferment mannitol and their inability to reduce nitrate or to hydrolyze gelatin. Because of their m...
متن کاملMutagenic action of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine on Gaffkya tibisci at alkaline pH.
Good yields of mutants were obtained by incubating cells of Gaffkya tibisci with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine in alkaline buffer. Nearly 50% of the survivors were auxotrophic mutants under the conditions described.
متن کاملOn the mechanism of action of vancomycin: inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis in Gaffkya homari.
Vancomycin inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan in membrane preparations from Gaffkya homari with uridine diphosphate-N-acetylmuramyl (UDP-Mur-NAc)-pentapeptide as substrate, but not with either UDP-MurNAc-tetrapeptide or UDP-MurNAc-tripeptide. These results are correlated with the specificity studies described by Perkins and Nieto for complex formation between the antibiotic and the peptide...
متن کاملIdentification of monounsaturated fatty acids of Aerococcus viridans with dimethyl disulfide derivatives and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
Location of the double-bond position of monounsaturated fatty acids of Aerococcus viridans was accomplished by combined gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry analysis of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) derivatives. The monoenoic fatty acids from whole bacterial cells were converted to methyl esters and then to DMDS adducts and analyzed by capillary GC-mass spectrometry. The mass spectra of DMDS a...
